Real estate photography according to Kike Marcén

The Spanish photographer Kike Marcén, a specialist in architecture and more specifically in photographing property, started working for the company Google seven years ago as a photographer for Street View Trusted, which allowed him to become one of the most sought after photographers in the international market. He has therefore worked for many agencies, architects and builders.

His passion for architecture has led him to further his theoretical grounding on the subject, particularly those areas focussing on new technical advances and the theoretical discussions which animate the profession, influenced by works such as Energy, environment and building by Philip Steadman, The autonomous house by Brenda and Robert Vale and How buildings work: the natural order of architecture by Edward Allen. Apart from his conceptual baggage and the fact that he has taken courses in architectural photography such as those run by the famous Joan Roig, his approach remains that of someone self-taught learning on the job.

Through his ability to capture the very essence of architectural principles (form, space and order), Kike Marcén is able to produce pictures in which life penetrates the constructed spaces. In spite of the objectivity accentuated by the purity of the lines and geometric shapes, he respects the nature of each material. Furthermore, he is able to play with the dichotomy of the different spaces, whether they are open zones such as gardens and bucolic atmospheres or the intimacy of interiors which are inherent to real estate photography.

Throughout all his pictures, there is a marked preference for focal depth, a play on perspectives, lines and volumes and a “naturalistic” approach to light at the service of the architectural mass. The result is architecture which is integrated into its environment, pure volumes which converse with the landscape - natural or urban - in which it sits. This interaction between the different elements reinforces the idea of luxury while at the same time revealing an “essential”, “natural” and “pure” character. To this end, Kike Marcén uses high-quality technical equipment and does not hesitate to intervene during the production and post-production process in order to obtain the best picture. He takes care of the lighting particularly and uses bracketing in most of his RAW format photographs in order to obtain wide, dynamic ranges and a great diversity of tone. The ultimate objective of this way of working is to be able to capture the architect’s vision of the space as faithfully as possible.

Being particularly attracted by the idea of photographing a recently constructed, classy architectural work, he aims to accentuate the innovative character while spotting the decorative details which can bring the maximum information possible to the image.
