What is Google My Business?

Google My Business is a service that allows businesses to manage their presence on Google. Google provides your restaurant’s name, address on Maps, opening hours and even reviews. Basically Google My Business gives restaurant owners their own profile on Google, which will appear when people search your restaurant’s name or type of cuisine in a local area.

Google My Business is brilliant for delivering simple information about your restaurant and as a result, people don’t need to click on the website as everything they need is already in search results thanks to GMB!

Why you should create a Google My Business page for your restaurant

65% of smartphone users search for restaurants within walking or driving distance.

66% look up the directions to a restaurant.

51% look for a contact number to make reservations. (Review Trackers)

People searching the Internet for good food places have a 90% conversion rate. This proves that the restaurant customer activity is more localized and urgent than other businesses.

  • Better Discoverability: Your restaurant Name, Description, Contact Number, Address, Opening Hours, Menu and Images will all be displayed immediately in the search engine. This makes it easy for potential customers to see what you provide, without even clicking on your website.

  • Makes Restaurant More Approachable: Customers can get exact driving directions to your Restaurant and call you directly on your contact number.

  • Boosts Online Ordering: Customers can place orders directly, which increases the traffic to your site. In some cases, Google was responsible for 51% of the traffic to a restaurant’s site. (Toast)

  • Search Results: Google My Business profile will always appear organically at the top of Google’s search results. This means you can appear at the top of the page organically without paying for Google Adwords.

  • Local Search Rankings: Google My Business will help boost your local search ranking. Google takes proximity into account, so if your restaurant is nearby it’s likely to appear at the top of the search results.

  • Competitive Advantage: Beat your local competitors who aren’t using Google My Business by ranking higher on ‘Google My Business Listing!’

  • Boosts Customer Experience: Google now provides an additional feature of uploading your menu, this enables customers to check what’s on offer before they step out their front door! You can edit your restaurant’s menu, which will be directly displayed in mobile searches.

  • Supports Review Handling: Google My Business lets you track how customers are engaging with your restaurant.

Managing reviews

Managing online reviews can be difficult and often seem out of your control. Google My Business understands the importance of addressing all reviews and lets you manage them. From photos to sales

Google My Business helps you to draw in new customers with photos. Often customers don’t bother to read the entire menu, but instead, look at a selection of photos from your restaurant’s menu. These pictures show what’s unique about your restaurant and you can post as many as you like!

Today everything is visual.

90% of information transmitted by the brain is visual.

94% more views are generated on sites that offer compelling images.

How to create your Google My Business account

  1. Create a Google account. If you already have that, sign in with your business email address (E.g. thomas.brown@restaurantname.com)

  2. Go to Google My Business and create your business listing, filling in details such as name, address, contact number, and business category.

  3. Verify your business listing. You need to choose between receiving a PIN-code via phone or mailed postcard. If you choose the postcard option, Google will send an envelope containing a code in the post. This may take a few weeks, but once you’ve received the code and inserted it, you’ll get the “verified” badge on your Google Plus business page. Without the verification step, you’ll lose half of the benefits arising from claiming your Google Plus page, so it’s very important!

  4. Once “verified,” you can edit your business profile. Sometimes a business page will already exist for your restaurant, search for your restaurant on Google and see if it pops up as a local business. If it appears, you’ll see a link: “Are you the business owner?” Click on that link to claim the profile.  If your page already exists, the next steps are much simpler than the ones described above!
