On March 10, 2018, in the Austrian capital of Vienna, a part of history took to the news. One of 3 remaining 1923 Leica cameras was sold for a record blowing mass sum of $2.9 million dollars (€2.4 million ). Vienna’s Westlicht camera auction house said auction price started at $429,300 (400,000 euros). After a bidding war began in the room and over the phone, the selling price rose over almost 6 times its opening price. The 95 year old original camera is said to be in “fantastic” condition. The Westlicht auction house confirms, “The camera is in fully working condition, all parts including the paintwork are original, with the matching lens cover, with the original folding finder.”

LEICA SERIE 0

This Leica 0-series (no. 122) was part of the first pre-production cameras ever made. They came out 2 years before the first Leica camera was ever sold in the market. According to Westlicht auction house, about 25 prototypes were produced and there are only 3 cameras known to be in their original condition. It’s an incredible piece of camera history.

This particular camera comes from the collection of Jim Jannard, founder of Oakley and producer of the RED digital camera. Remarkably, the camera was purchased by a private collector in Asia.

However, this has not been the only Leica camera to make a record. The previous record holding camera was the Leica 0-series (no.116) selling for $2.6 million back in 2012 at the same auction house in Vienna.

The German company, Leica, was founded by Ernst Leitz in 1914. Surprisingly, the famous name comes from the first 3 letters of his surname and the first 2 letters of the word camera. Famous photographers from all over the world  have been using Leica cameras to capture some of the most famous photographs ever taken.
