FOTODEMIC, in partnership with the Meero Foundation, awards the 2020 Meero Foundation Grant to eight artists
Bayeté Ross Smith, Btihal Remli, Chinula Mandla, Mahé Elipe, Ramin Nazur, Robert Pluma, Sumeja Tulic, and Wanda Von Bremen will be receiving financial support, exposure, mentorship, and a platform for the publication of their projects.
As FOTODEMIC’s early sponsor, the Meero Foundation is proud to announce the eight recipients of the 2020 Meero Foundation Grant following FOTODEMIC’s open call in July. Bayeté Ross Smith, Btihal Remli, Chinula Mandla, Mahé Elipe, Ramin Nazur, Robert Pluma, Sumeja Tulic, and Wanda Von Bremen, photographers coming from all over the world, have been selected to receive financial support, exposure, mentorship, and a platform for the publication of their projects.
With the goal of amplifying important projects not represented in mainstream media and maximizing distribution through micro-grants, the Foundation sponsors artists who use innovative storytelling methods to impact the collective consciousness. FOTODEMIC always looks for proposals that engage with viewers emotionally, reshape their way of thinking, challenge the status quo, and motivate action.
The grant call was open for 14 days in which 53 applications from five continents were received. Grant applicants included artists who exhibit their work in collections of The Smithsonian Institution, The Brooklyn Museum, and the Foto Museum in Belgium. Their work has been published in Le Monde, Liberation, Mediapart, The New York Times, Vice, and Al Jazeera.
Among them, eight projects were considered particularly helping envision a path to a better future.
BAYETÉ ROSS SMITH - Our Kind Of People
Our Kind Of People examines how clothing, ethnicity, and gender impact our perception of people, their values, and how valuable society deems them to be.
BITHAL REMLI - Djinni Diaries
Djinni Diaries explores the intersection of spirituality and women’s role in Moroccan society through still lives of recipes and ingredients that are used in magic rituals.
CHINULA MANDLA- Na Gracious
This multimedia piece is about Na Gracious (Gracious’ Mother), a mother of three filmed during her recovery from a mental condition. Chinula’s experiences with Na Gracious break stereotypes and explore the complexity of mental illness and rehabilitation.
MAHE ELIPE - The Other Pandemic
The Other Pandemic focuses on the increase in violence against women during the COVID-19 crisis in Mexico, as well as the people and organizations that support survivors.
RAMIN MAZUR - Coronascope
Coronascope investigates the ‘infodemic’ and the way that the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic have been covered. This project scrutinizes visuals provided by search engines on inquiries such as “coronavirus” and “Covid-19.” Photographed under a magnifying glass, these images question the way groundbreaking events are represented.
ROBERT PLUMA - Hidden-Histories of San José Mission
Hidden-Histories of San José Mission provides a counter-narrative history of Texas - once a part of Mexico and inhabited by many different indigenous peoples. Through an augmented reality application that uses oral histories, still images, and video of living mission descendants and other related materials, this project opens new pathways of storytelling.
SUMEJA TULIC - One Unholy Cow Photographic Plaque as Reparations: The Kravice Wearhouse
This project is an effort to memorialize the unmarked sites of mass killings during the Srebrenica genocide. By marking the seven locations of mass executions on Google maps, Unholy Cow will provide a visual and textual narrative that acknowledges the crimes committed.
WANDA VON BREMEN - Holisis
By juxtaposing the common perceptionsof beauty and decay, Holisis emphasizes the diversity and balance of our ecosystem.

Technical evolutions have always transformed our practices and modified our perception of the world. The evolution of the digital image - along with new ways of expression, communication and socialization - creates new challenges for image-makers.
Instant, connected, multiplied, images are now shared in all places and circumstances. But are we still able to appreciate them, or let them have enough impact? Visual artists have always confronted the contemporary challenges that we face, from the conservation of our natural environment, to the fight against poverty and discrimination, to the necessity of access to health care and education, as well as ways to reinforce solidarity among people. The Meero Foundation gives back to photographers, whether they be professional or amateur. We hope to become a trusted partner for photographers who wish to look for additional meaning in their artistic purpose, and ultimately define the role they want to play as visual storytellers.
Through our innovation-driven program, we encourage the recipients of the Meero Foundation’s actions to help define the creative processes of tomorrow and to tell impactful stories to maximize positive social change. True to our values, we further envision the Meero Foundation as a hub for expression, diversity, solidarity, the sharing of human values, and as a perpetual visual laboratory.
FOTODEMIC is an online publication established in response to the coronavirus pandemic that has profoundly altered normal life on a global scale.
