Film photography has an inimitable charm. Beyond the inimitable style of photographs, there is the satisfaction of discovery after developing your photos, a bit like receiving a gift for each film roll. However, developing your photos is not as easy. This is why more and more enthusiasts are developing their own photo lab that allows them to do everything themselves. The process requires a lot of patience, but also specific equipment. It will be necessary among other things to obtain developer and fixer in a bottle, found in specialized stores or on the internet. But once again, these products are not always easy to find: they are often expensive, perishable and, above all, very bad for the environment. Indeed, phenol, used as a developer, is highly corrosive to living organisms. A 1% aqueous solution is enough to cause severe irritation and phenol burns are particularly painful and time-consuming to heal.
The YouTube channel "Nifty" has found an alternative using everyday products. In a recently released video, where they manage to develop their film using instant coffee with vitamin C, water and soda crystals. This preparation works simply because we find the famous phenols in the elements mentioned earlier. Coffee, orange juice, tea, or even wine are all potential alternatives as well. This leaves room for experimentation. This solution only works for black and white film, however, color photography being a bit more complicated.
