Dare You Look Them In The Eyes?

Apr 5, 2018 by Lisa Scarpa

George Wheelhouse, a well-known wildlife photographer, has taken traditional wildlife animals and created a modern perspective with them. At the very beginning of his career, he wanted to do landscape photography, more specifically trees, and woodland areas. It is said that as a boy, he loved being outdoors and adored any type of animal or wildlife he encountered. After trying to take pictures of a deer one day, he became hooked to wildlife photography and his amazing career began.

In this project, George Wheelhouse has taken his photos of animals and humanized them by putting them in a low key or high key portrait setting and engaging them with the viewer. The black background brings a more mysterious, moody feel to the photo whereas the white represents optimism. Each animal photographed is either from the wild or from several different zoos and or wildlife centers. This has been one of Wheelhouse’s longest side projects in his career and he is proud of the results.

“I want to convey the character of the individual I'm photographing, to spark a connection and empathy with the viewer. My ultimate goal is to highlight the similarity between humanity and nature, and reinforce respect for animals.” - George Wheelhouse
